In order to get spread sheet, click on Start >All Program > M.S Office > M.S Excel. Then the following screen appears.

1. Entering the Data

We can enter three types of data in Excel sheet, namely, Number, Headings (Lables) and Formulae or Functions.
Let us see how the data is entered into Excel Sheet

2. Mathematical Symbols

There are no symbols like Division (-), Multiplication (X) in Excel. However in Excel, we use symbol (*) for multiplication and / (slash) symbols for division. The remaining Mathematical symbols of Plus (+) and Minus (-) are same in Excel also.

3. Increasing Column width

When we enter names of amounts in Excel Sheet. some names may occupy more space. For example, In A4 Cell, the amount is 123,456.00 is not fully adjusted. Let us learn how to adjust the name fully in that cell.
  • Click on the cell which click is to be widened.
  • Click on Format > Auto Fit Column width.
  • Consequently, the column width will be expanded in order to fill the letters (i.e. 123,456.00) in the cell.

 4. Performing Mathematical Calculations in Excel Sheet

In order to perform mathematical calculations, we can use figures like

  • First enter the data.
  • Click o the cell where we want answer (i.e.A6)
  • Type equal = Symbol in the cell so that the computer will know that we want to perform calculations. Then enter A1+A5 in the cell.
  • Click on the mouse. The answer will appear.
  • In the same way, use minus (-) symbol to get the answer.
  • Use * symbol to multiplying
  • two figures or cells.

5. A simple method to calculate Totals

suppose we want to calculate the total marks of one student. We need not apply the same formula to get totals of all other students. We can calculate the total for all number of cells with a single click by using summation are given below.

  • First enter the quantity of all items or open work sheet.
  • Type total in B8 cell
  • Select the marks of all the quantities from first cell (including the cells in which we want answer)
  • Click on Total icon i.e.,
  • See the result. The total marks of all the students appears in the B column.
